One Poem Can Make a Difference...

During our Annual Dinner Reimagined!, which you helped raise over $25,000 for, Will Jones III wrote a beautiful poem that he dedicated to Friends In Deed. Make sure to check it out if you haven’t! The page has both the video and the written piece.

Thank you, Will!

You Helped Make a Difference...

Our Bed & Crib Drive raised $26,579.27! This is the most the Drive has ever raised. With your help, and Van Winkle’s match of 25%, it came to a total of $33,079.27. We are overjoyed! This year has been difficult, but you still came together to make this a record breaking event. Thank you, truly.

One Volunteer Program Can Make a Difference...

It certainly makes a difference to us at Friends In Deed — we are well aware how much we rely on our volunteers — but it also makes a difference to our community. So much so, that our volunteer program received state recognition. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (shown here) awarded us a Governor Service Award in the category of Outstanding Volunteer Program. Let’s face it, we owe it all to our outstanding volunteers!

One Mission Statement Can Make a Difference...

Friends In Deed has assisted low-income families in Washtenaw County for 35 years. We’ve learned a lot during that time and used that experience to continually shape our services and programs to better meet the needs of our community. Recognizing this evolution, we thought it time to revise our Mission Statement so it reflects who we are as an organization today.

One Program Can Make a Difference...

You’ve heard about our new fangled Circles program, but what is it all about?

We created a slide-show presentation as part of our participation in the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation’s Bold Ideas program that does a good job of explaining the Circles Washtenaw approach to eradicating poverty in our community. A big thank you to AAACF for the opportunity, as well as the grant monies and donations we’ve received because of it.

One Car Donation Can Make a Difference...

Kayla is a single, working mom with two children. Relying on friends for transportation to and from work, her arrangements became strained when her one-year-old son required treatment for a serious, chronic medical condition. Friends In Deed was able to help by passing on a used car donated by one of our generous supporters.

One Endowment Fund Can Make a Difference...

A Big Difference. We are very excited to announce the establishment of The Roy & Carol Weber Fund for Friends In Deed (FID). The Weber Family created the fund to ensure consistent support for FID into the future. Best of all, it is open to donations from anyone at any time.

So why an endowment? Mike Weber explains why his family chose to provide this kind of support in this VIDEO.

One Volunteer Can Make a Difference...

Volunteering as an Ally in our Circles program can make a big difference! As an Ally, you’ll work closely with one family and accompany them on their journey out of poverty. You’ll also be part of the larger Circles community, where you will share meals, resources and friendship. We are currently recruiting Allies for our new cohort/class that starts in the fall.

Our Mission Statement

Helping People in Need; Building Community to End Poverty

Our Programs and Services

Furniture

Friends In Deed accepts donations of used furniture and passes it on, for free, to our community’s many families in need.

Transportation

Friends In Deed offers car repair assistance to families who need a car to get to work and/or to obtain medical treatment for a severe condition.

Circles

Circles is a program  based on the premise that developing meaningful relationships across socio-economic lines has a dramatic impact on the effort to move families out of poverty.

Direct Assistance

Our direct assistance programs involve utilities, one-time prescriptions, monthly storage, work shoes, school supplies, and other things on a case by case basis.

More About Us

Friends In Deed has been around for a while. For over 35 years, we’ve worked to help our neighbors in need by filling in the cracks of assistance offered by other organizations and nonprofits in the community. In recent years, we expanded our focus. While we still have two program areas that help stabilize families in crisis, we now have a third program that focuses on building community to end poverty:

  • Our Direct Assistance Program helps families prevent utility shut off, repair a car to get to work or medical appointments, obtain a prescription or other one-time medical need and more.
  • Our Furniture Program helps families obtain basic-needs furniture, including beds, kitchen tables and chairs, couches, etc.
  • Our Circles Program focuses on helping families to lift themselves out of poverty.

Friends In Deed History

Friends In Deed evolved from the efforts of Polly Helmke and Libby Hillegonds, who brought together a group of people to study the Love Inc. model back in 1982. With the support of several local congregations, the group eventually pooled their ideas about the services needed by the Washtenaw County community and created Friends In Deed.module Advanced settings.

Humble Beginnings

The doors opened on June 5th, 1983, with a volunteer staff in donated office space: 64 N. Huron Street in Ypsilanti. While requests for assistance started pouring in almost immediately, the organization didn’t have its first paid position until 1985, when Barbara Beesley accepted a part-time position as Program Director. As the organization grew over the next few years to serve more people, the staff grew as well. In 1988, Helena Prince was hired as a part-time casework manager.

Adaptive Service Programs

Friends In Deed’s mandate has always been to fill in the cracks of service offered by the other organizations and nonprofits in the community, which means Friends In Deed’s services have changed and evolved over the years. For instance, at times during the organization’s history, Friends In Deed offered an appliance repair program and eviction-prevention program. It also offered parenting workshops, new mom’s support groups, financial management training and a car-care clinic.

The late 1990s was the time period during which several services and programs were initiated that continue to this day, including the Car Repair program, Furniture program, How-to-Help Seminar, and Resource Guides publications.

Congregational Support

While the Direct Assistance and Furniture programs continued to grow over the years, so, too, did Friends In Deed’s congregational support. By the early 2000s, Friends In Deed had a network of 47 congregations that supported us financially and with volunteers.

Office and Warehouse Facilities

This growth eventually resulted in the need to consolidate Friends In Deed’s operations and warehouse. A Capital Campaign was created in 2007 with the goal of raising $300,000 to purchase, renovate and equip a building: 1196 Ecorse Road in Ypsilanti. Friends In Deed moved into the facility in December of 2008. Through the generous donations and pledges from the Board of Directors, the Capital Campaign was completed and the mortgage retired in early 2011.

Moving Forward

Helena Prince retired in 2011, and Sarah Thornburg was hired as the new Executive Director. The mission at Friends In Deed continues to adapt to the needs of the community. We look forward to the next 30 years of serving Washtenaw County
