Back in 2013, the State of Michigan reduced the months in which DHS could offer utility assistance. The result is that our neighbors in Washtenaw County are no longer able to apply to DHS for utility assistance during the non-crisis months of June through October.
Ever since that time, Friends In Deed has been diligently working to fill in the gap. With the help of organizations like the United Way of Washtenaw County’s Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) Fund, we might just pull it off. WLI recently awarded Friends in Deed a $5,000 grant in support of Utility Assistance for Single-Parent Households During Non-Crisis Months.
Because of friends like the Women’s Leadership Initiative, a lot of families in Washtenaw County will keep their electricity and gas on. This means they will be able to carry on the task of daily living, which includes eating a hot meal with a cold glass of milk, doing homework with adequate lighting, washing & drying school and work clothes and a whole lot more.
Thanks WLI!
