A Poverty Simulation is a three-hour experiential learning workshop in which participants are sensitized to the realities of living in poverty. This is a simulation, not a game. In the simulation, participants are given scripted role assignments and structured situations. Some are newly unemployed, some have suffered a recent death in the family, and others are working low-paying jobs, sometimes only part-time. Still others are disabled or are senior citizens receiving social security. The availability of cash assistance is extremely limited in today’s world. “Families” meet the obstacles and bureaucracy of day-to-day life. Some families have preschoolers, others have elementary-aged children and some have teenagers. The task of the “families” is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.”
