The 2015 How-to-Help Seminar took place on Monday, October 26th, and we at Friends In Deed thought it was very successful in a number of ways. For instance, we noticed a lot of new faces this year — probably due to the outreach efforts of Charlene Logwood, our casework supervisor. We hope this means that we are reaching more congregations for inclusion in our information and resource network.
The seminar featured information from Ryan Clemons of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), who updated the group on DHHS changes; Tenetia Pulliam of Housing Access for Washtenaw County (HAWC), who gave us an overview of HAWC’s many programs; and Mary Beth Lampe of Community Support and Treatment Services (CSTS), who helped show us how to identify mental-health issues.
In addition, Sarah Thornburg and Charlene Logwood of Friends In Deed reminded congregation representatives that Friends In Deed should be considered a resource as they field requests for assistance from individuals and families in the community. They also suggested that congregations have a policy in place for how they deal with requests for assistance.
If you have any questions about the information provided in the seminar or would like a copy of our list of “red flags” when dealing with people asking for assistance, please drop us an email at office@FriendsInDeed.info.
